Southwest School of Ballet opened in Putney in 1993 and provides ballet education to students aged 2½ to 18 years, as well as adult classes. The school is led by Principal Karen Langer, who holds RAD RTS qualifications. Classes follow the Royal Academy of Dance syllabus and are accompanied by pianists.
The school offers a graded structure beginning with Nursery classes for children aged 2½ to 4 years, progressing through Pre-Primary, Primary, and Grades 1 through 8. Advanced students may be invited to join RAD Intermediate Foundation and RAD Intermediate levels, which also include Pointe work. Students can prepare for Royal Academy of Dance examinations. The school has produced six original full-length ballets, including Alice in Wonderland, The Water Babies, and Practically Perfect.
Classes take place at three locations: Putney Methodist Church, Putney Leisure Centre, and Sheen Lane Centre in East Sheen. Weekday classes are held at Putney Methodist Church, while Saturday classes run at Putney Leisure Centre.
