Charkiv City Opera & Ballet presents classical ballet productions in Dutch theaters. The company performs traditional versions of ballets with original choreography by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, set to music by Tchaikovsky.
The company’s repertoire includes two full-length classical ballets. “Het Zwanenmeer” (Swan Lake) tells the story of Odette, a swan queen under the spell of the evil sorcerer Rothbart, who can only be freed by true love. The production features the technically demanding double role of Odette and Odile. “De Notenkraker” (The Nutcracker) follows Clara, who receives a nutcracker doll on Christmas Eve and dreams of adventures with the Nutcracker. This production is accompanied by a large orchestra and includes virtuosic dance sequences.
Both productions are performed in theaters throughout the Netherlands. The company presents these classical titles with choreography that follows the original Petipa and Ivanov versions.
