The Ballet School of the Finnish National Opera and Ballet is a national classical ballet institution that forms part of Finland’s official education system. Operated by the Finnish National Opera and Ballet foundation, it is the only institution in Finland offering vocational education in classical ballet and broad basic education in dance focused on classical ballet. The school has nationwide remit and traces its origins to 1922, receiving its education permit as a publicly funded institution in 1998. Instruction is conducted in Finnish.
The school provides two separate educational tracks: broad basic education in dance and vocational education for dance artists. Broad basic education includes alkuopetus, ala-aste, and nuorisoaste levels, organized as B1–B9 ballet classes. Vocational training is primarily for upper-secondary-age students and leads to a 180-competence-point qualification as a tanssija (dancer). The school also offers special training courses for talented hobby dancers aged 12–15 living outside the capital region, organized in three level groups (EK1, EK2, EK3) three to four times per year. Course content may include ballet, contemporary dance, pointe technique, character dance, repertoire, and body maintenance.
All students undergo entrance examinations for admission. The school is located at Helsinginkatu 58 in Töölö, Helsinki, and operates under principal Satu Ristlakki.
