The Maria Anderson School of Dance and Drama was founded in 1945 by Maria Anderson, who began teaching in her parents’ living room in Ruislip after working as a choreographer and performer. The school is now run by three generations of the Anderson family: Maria Anderson, her daughter Beverley Hague, and granddaughter Lisa Shepherd. The school operates from purpose-built studios with sprung flooring at 120 Elliott Avenue in Ruislip.
Classes are offered for students from age 2 through to adults in multiple dance styles and drama. Ballet training follows the RAD syllabus, while tap and modern follow the ISTD syllabus. The school teaches modern, tap, ballet, acrobatics, musical theatre, jazz, contemporary, and drama. Examinations are available from Primary through Advanced 2 levels in ballet, tap, and modern. Adult classes include ballet, tap, and pilates.
Students participate in dance festivals throughout the year, including the All England Dance competition, and perform in professional theatres. The school holds a biennial show at the Beck Theatre and a Christmas Cabaret in alternating years. Former students have performed professionally in West End productions, on cruise ships, and in television work.
