Ekklesia Contemporary Ballet is a professional dance company based in Middletown, Connecticut. Founded in 2005 by Artistic Director Elisa Schroth, the company explores the intersections of theology, dance, and social justice through contemporary ballet. The repertoire addresses themes including poverty, inequality, human suffering, and PTSD. Productions include works such as “Dark Night,” which reflects on Psalm 42 and incorporates stories from Muslims and Christians affected by PTSD, and “Roar Of Nations,” created in response to the humanitarian crisis in Syria. The company presents an annual production called Ahavah, described as a Christmas tradition performed in Connecticut for twenty years.
The organization operates Ekklesia School of Ballet, a pre-professional dance school offering classical ballet training for both professional and recreational dancers. The school serves ages three through adult, with students placed by skill level rather than age. Classes include ballet, pointe, contemporary, acrobatics, and conditioning. The curriculum emphasizes classical technique with versatile movement quality. Adult classes are available at beginner through advanced levels. The school also runs Middletown Arts Connect, a free after-school program providing dance instruction, homework assistance, and snacks for elementary school students.
