Marigny Opera Ballet is a contemporary dance company founded in 2014 by Dave Hurlbert and based at the Marigny Opera House in New Orleans, Louisiana. The company produces original contemporary ballets performed to live musical accompaniment. Each season runs from December through May and is created by hiring choreographers, composers, musicians, and designers to develop new works. The company partners with Verismo Opera to present ballet-operas.
The company includes professional dancers who rehearse daily at the Opera House and has attracted performers from various locations including London, New York, and the Greater New Orleans area. Dave Hurlbert serves as Executive Director, with Bogdan Mynka as Artistic Director and Amalia Najera as Resident Choreographer. Recent productions have included works such as “New Orleans Jazz Nutcracker,” “A Streetcar Named Desire,” and various world premieres featuring collaborations with local musicians and composers.
The company is funded and administered by the Marigny Opera House Foundation and receives support from the City of New Orleans through Arts New Orleans, along with other local foundations. Its artistry has received recognition through awards from the Gambit Tribute to the Classical Arts in New Orleans.
