Gibney is a New York City-based dance and social justice organization founded in 1991 by choreographer Gina Gibney. It operates as a dance company, performing arts hub, and social action incubator with two locations totaling 52,000 square feet, including 23 studios and 5 performance spaces. The organization deploys resources through three program areas: Gibney Center, Gibney Community, and Gibney Company.
Gibney Company is the resident dance ensemble, led by Artistic Director Gina Gibney. The Company commissions new works and builds repertory emphasizing contemporary dance, physical rigor, and humanistic storytelling. Since 2021, commissioned choreographers have included Rena Butler, Lucinda Childs, Peter Chu, William Forsythe, Johan Inger, Emilie Leriche, Mthuthuzeli November, Alan Lucien Øyen, Gustavo Ramirez Sansano, Jermaine Spivey & Spenser Theberge, Sonya Tayeh, Tiffany Tregarthen & David Raymond, and Yue Yin. The Company also performs repertory by Sharon Eyal, Johan Inger, Ohad Naharin, and Twyla Tharp. Full-time Artistic Associates serve as performing artists, activists, and cultural entrepreneurs, advancing the organization’s artistry through performance and community engagement.
Gibney Center offers drop-in classes, intensives, workshops, and training programs shaped through an antiracist lens with emphasis on accessibility. Community programs include Hands are for Holding, a youth workshop series addressing healthy relationships, and Move to Move Beyond, an evidence-based movement program for survivors of gender-based violence launched in 1999.
