Fondazione Nazionale della Danza operates under the name Aterballetto for its producing and touring activities. The organization was recognized by the Ministry of Culture in 2022 as Italy’s first National Choreographic Centre. Aterballetto was founded in 1977 as Compagnia di Balletto dei Teatri dell’Emilia-Romagna and renamed in 1979. The foundation itself was established in 2003 by the Emilia-Romagna Region and the Municipality of Reggio Emilia. The company is based at Fonderia in Reggio Emilia and became a Regional Dance Centre in 1991.
The contemporary dance company comprises sixteen dancers who perform works by choreographers including Crystal Pite, Marcos Morau, and Diego Tortelli. Recent repertoire includes Solo Echo, Notte Morricone, Glory Hall, Rhapsody in Blue, and Stabat Mater. The company tours nationally and internationally, with performances in Italy, France, Belgium, and Germany. Luigi Cristoforetti serves as director, with his current term running from 2025 to 2029.
The organization offers artist residencies, hosts performances by other companies, and develops projects connecting dance with audiovisual media and immersive technologies. Educational programs include advanced training courses, workshops on dance and disability, and projects for children and adults.
