The National Ballet of Japan is the resident ballet company of Japan’s only national theatre for ballet, the New National Theatre, Tokyo. Founded in 1997 when the theatre opened, the company has been directed by five artistic directors over nearly 30 years. Miyako Yoshida currently serves as Artistic Director of Ballet & Dance. The company presents a repertoire spanning 19th-century classical ballet, 20th-century masterpieces, and contemporary choreography.
The company performs at the New National Theatre’s Opera Palace, which features a built-in orchestra pit and four stages. Productions include full-length classical ballets such as Don Quixote, The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, Romeo and Juliet, and Raymonda, alongside contemporary works. The company also presents DANCE to the Future, a programme featuring works from the NBJ Choreographic Group, a project that trains choreographers from within the company. The company tours nationally, performing in cities including Fukuoka, Hyogo, Toyama, and Otsu.
The company operates educational initiatives including ballet programmes and workshops for children led by soloist dancers, the Children’s Theatre-Going Programme for young people with limited access to the arts, and Ballet Mirai Seat for elementary and junior high school students.
