Ballet in Taiwan (台灣) is part of a broader dance culture that includes both classical and contemporary forms. While ballet is not as widespread as other dance styles, there are dedicated efforts and organizations supporting ballet artists and enthusiasts in the country.
Taiwan Ballet Company is a notable ballet organization based in Taipei. It conducts auditions to recruit dancers for its annual productions and focuses on both classical and contemporary ballet techniques. In addition, the Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, based in New Taipei City, is a major contemporary dance company that, while primarily contemporary, represents Taiwan’s dance scene internationally.
For ballet education, places like Genie Ballet Academy in Taipei offer ballet classes accessible to various skill levels, mainly catering to local students, with options for trial and class passes. The National Taipei University of Arts also offers degree programs in dance, which include ballet learning as part of their curriculum.
Ballet auditions such as those held by the Taiwan Ballet Company are organized periodically, requiring dancers to attend in person. There are also ballet competitions like the Taiwan Grand Prix International Ballet Competition, which attracts students and professionals alike.
Ballet dancers in Taiwan can obtain their supplies at specialized shops with walk-in services, including KeithLink Show Room in Taipei and Clowen Ballet in Kaohsiung. These shops provide ballet-specific supplies such as pointe shoes and leotards, supporting local dancers’ needs.
In summary, while ballet resources within Taiwan are somewhat specialized and centered around major cities like Taipei, some dancers may travel overseas for broader opportunities in training, performances, or supply options. The local scene provides foundational support through companies, schools, auditions, events, and supply shops but is complemented by connections to the international ballet community.
