Ballet in Thailand (ไทย) is a specialized art form within the broader dance culture of the country. While traditional Thai dance holds a strong cultural presence, ballet is practiced and appreciated mainly in urban centers like Bangkok. The ballet community includes both classical ballet and contemporary dance styles, supported by dedicated institutions and studios.
One prominent ballet organization in Thailand is the Bangkok City Ballet, established in 1996. It is recognized as a professional ballet company and school, providing training in classical and contemporary ballet. The company collaborates internationally and performs a variety of ballet works, hosting performances and dance galas primarily in Bangkok.
Ballet education is also available in Bangkok through schools like the Bangkok City Ballet School, which offers a registered curriculum under the Ministry of Education. Additionally, several dance studios in Bangkok provide ballet classes and drop-in sessions for different skill levels, catering to children and adults interested in ballet training.
Ballet auditions and events occur periodically, mainly organized by Bangkok City Ballet and other ballet-focused groups. These include auditions for company roles, dance galas, and ballet-intensive educational programs designed to nurture young dance talent and connect dancers with professional opportunities.
For ballet supply needs, two well-established shops in Bangkok are Sansha Dance Shop, located in MBK Center, and Sonata Dancewear Thailand, situated in Phayathai Plaza. These shops offer ballet shoes, leotards, tutus, and accessories. Sonata Dancewear provides specialized pointe shoe fitting services by expert fitters.
In summary, ballet dancers in Thailand primarily rely on the resources available in Bangkok for training, performances, and supplies. For some advanced training or broader opportunities, dancers might travel to nearby countries with larger ballet communities or educational institutions. Overall, Bangkok remains the central hub for ballet activities in Thailand.
