Ballet in St. Louis (USA) is supported by several professional and educational institutions dedicated to the art form. The city hosts the Saint Louis Ballet, a professional ballet company that performs mainstage productions at venues like the Touhill Performing Arts Center and the Kirkwood Performing Arts Center. Their seasonal repertoire includes classical and contemporary works, and they maintain a professional training program alongside summer ballet camps for various age groups.
Saint Louis Ballet School offers structured classes ranging from introductory pre-ballet for young children to advanced levels for teenagers, including pointe classes for qualifying students. The school also accommodates adult beginners and provides private lessons. Many instructors are from the professional company, ensuring high-quality training. The school presents performance opportunities annually, including participation in major productions.
Auditions for ballet companies like Ballet 314 and Saint Louis Ballet’s trainee programs provide local dancers with opportunities to join professional ranks. Community cast auditions for productions such as “The Nutcracker and The World’s Fair” are also organized, supporting engagement with ballet at different levels.
For ballet supplies, dancers can visit well-established shops such as Head To Toe Dancewear in downtown Kirkwood and St. Louis Dancewear in Olivette. Both stores offer ballet shoes, tights, dance apparel, and accessories with walk-in shopping, including pointe shoe fittings usually booked by appointment.
While St. Louis provides a solid foundation for ballet dancers, some may travel to nearby larger cities for additional training and performance opportunities. The city’s proximity to cultural hubs in the region supports access to broader ballet experiences.
Overall, St. Louis maintains a stable ecosystem for ballet through its professional company, educational programs, local auditions, and supply shops, allowing dancers to develop their skills and participate in performances within the city and nearby areas.
