Ballet in Reggio Emilia, Italy, is supported primarily through its modern dance and ballet company known as Aterballetto. Founded in 1977, Aterballetto has grown to become Italy’s first National Choreographic Center, recognized officially by the Ministry of Culture in 2022. The company is based in the city and contributes to the ballet scene through both performance and education.
Reggio Emilia hosts the Teatro Municipale Valli, a historic theatre that sponsors ballet performances along with other forms of opera and classical music events. Ballet shows and events, including performances by Aterballetto, are periodically held here, engaging local audiences and artists alike.
Ballet education is available through Aterballetto’s facilities, which offer classes and training programs tailored to various skill levels. While other dedicated ballet schools in the city are not widely documented, the presence of this choreographic center provides a key resource for ballet dancers.
Auditions for ballet companies such as Aterballetto and Nuovo Balletto Classico take place in Reggio Emilia. These auditions invite classical dancers for consideration in upcoming seasons, reflecting an active although specialized ballet audition scene in the city.
For ballet supplies, dancers in Reggio Emilia typically find their needs through shops such as Capezio, which has a location in the city offering walk-in shopping for ballet shoes and accessories. There is no specific ballet-only supply shop widely recognized beyond this. Ballet dancers may also use general dance supply shops located in nearby larger cities for more variety.
Overall, ballet resources directly in Reggio Emilia are centered around Aterballetto, with theatre performances and occasional auditions taking place locally. Ballet dancers often travel to nearby cities like Bologna and Milan for broader educational opportunities and extensive supply options, reflecting the city’s smaller scale in this specialized art form.
